ABB

ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 117,000 people with 31b$ turnover.  The Discrete Automation and Motion division provides products, solutions and related services that increase industrial productivity and energy efficiency. Its motors, generators, drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), power electronics and robotics provide power, motion and control for a wide range of automation applications. The leading position in wind generators and a growing offering in solar complement the industrial focus, leveraging joint technology, channels and operations platforms. With its 20 years of experience, ABB serves wind power customers at every stage of the process. Our in-depth know-how, years of experience and thorough understanding of both wind turbine applications and power systems have made ABB a leading partner for the wind power industry. Our offer includes everything from electrical design to substation construction up to project management and installation and commissioning. A comprehensive offering includes generators, LV and MV converters, transformers, switchgear, LV products and cables.

ABB has a high experience in the area of power converters and medium voltage drives. They are used in various applications with a power range from 1 to 50 MW. Their technology fits especially well to the demands of wind turbine converters. A new platform for wind turbine converters was therefore developed. ABB now offers these converters in the range of 1 – 5 MW to the market. These are also in operation for driving the first commercial 5+ MW wind turbines. The converter technology of ABB is applied for the grid stabilization in offshore windparks as well. These statcoms are based on the same technology platform.

In HiPRWind, ABB participates as leader of the WP5 and is responsible for the task 5.1. This task concentrates on the development of an extremely reliable high power converter for wind turbines. The selected technology will be tested on-shore with a prototype, especially developed for this project. Within WP5 ABB will also support Task 5.2 by bringing in its experience.
